Amit Kumar, Founder-Director, Occupational Therapist
BOT, MA (Sociology), C/NDT
Amit has been practicing occupational therapy for over 20 years. He has extensive experience in providing community based occupational therapy to clients with brain injuries and orthopaedic conditions. Amit has had a variety of international experiences which include establishment of two occupational therapy departments. He has worked extensively with clients with brain injuries and orthopaedic conditions in various countries including Canada, Ireland, Kuwait, and India.
Amit is certified in Neuro Developmental Therapy from NDTA, USA; and trained in Dementia Care Mapping (DCM) from the University of Bradford, UK. He is also trained in seating and complex postural management from the UK. Amit holds a certificate in Integrated Disability Management from University of Fredericton. Amit has successfully completed International Yoga Teachers Training course (100 hours) from India, and is able to combine this knowledge with occupational therapy to holistically treat clients suffering pain and illness. Amit is also a certified PGAP provider.
Amit has always been a respected member of the industry, and enjoys mentoring. He has made presentations in international conferences, and is well experienced in conducting workshops for clients, caregivers, and health care professionals. Amit has served as a member of the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists - British Columbia (CAOT-BC) Advisory Committee. Amit currently serves as a member of Professional Advisory Committee of Stroke Recovery Association of British Columbia.
As the founder-director of Life skills Therapy, Amit is responsible for strategic planning and operational management.
Lakshmi Gupta, Founder-Director, Occupational therapist
BOT, MSc OT
Lakshmi has been in the field of occupational therapy for over 16 years. Lakshmi graduated as an occupational therapist from the University of Calcutta in 2001 as one of the top students. Later on, she was awarded a scholarship from the British government to study MSc in Occupational Therapy in England, which she successfully completed in 2003 from Coventry University. Lakshmi is a life-long learner, and has continued to enhance her skills and compliment her OT practice.
Lakshmi has extensive experience working in both acute hospital and community settings in various countries including India, Ireland, and Canada. She has special interest in home safety assessments, neurological rehabilitation, and falls prevention.
As the founder-director of Life skills Therapy, Lakshmi is responsible for strategic planning and operational management.
Valerie Lowther, Business Manager
Valerie has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia. She also obtained a marketing diploma from the Canadian Associated Insurance Brokers.
Valerie worked for the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia for twenty seven years. She has over twenty years of experience in handling claims and rehabilitation files. Valerie worked as a rehabilitation coordinator/senior recovery coordinator for the past ten years with ICBC. She was involved in the development of an individualized rehabilitation plan for clients who sustain severe disabilities or catastrophic injuries from a crash. She worked with the medical, rehabilitation, other health care and legal professionals and employers to implement the rehab plan. While employed at ICBC, Valerie took numerous in house courses to enhance customer service, public speaking and adjusting skills.
Valerie volunteers as a Sun Run leader. She has many years of volunteer experience with summer swim club, soccer and Girl Guides. She enjoys running, yoga, hiking and going to the gym. She enjoys the outdoors and keeping active.
Ekam Makkar, Accounting Assistant
Ekam completed an Accounting Diploma from British Columbia Institute of Technology in 2018. She joined Life Skills Therapy in early 2019. Prior to joining Life Skills Therapy, Ekam worked at an Engineering firm assisting with accounting duties.
At Life Skills Therapy, Ekam assists with processing timesheets, submitting invoices and generating reports. She also assists with collection of outstanding invoices and other accounting duties as requested.
Ekam is a team player with great interpersonal skills, and strong work ethics. Outside of work, Ekam enjoys exploring the beautiful British Columbia.
Moumita Gupta, Service Coordinator
Moumita has more than 10 years’ experience in administration and office management. At Life Skills Therapy, Moumita assists with administration, client referrals and coordination of clients and therapists. She enjoys being a team player and being of assistance to clients.
Moumita is a caring and hardworking individual with great interpersonal and customer service skills. She enjoys being able to help the clients while managing day to day functions of the clinic.
Outside of work, Moumita enjoys reading and travelling. She loves to walk by the ocean and enjoys spending time with her family.
Janice Cho, Media Coordinator
Janice graduated from UBC with a Bachelor of Science degree in Integrated Sciences. Her disciplines were Developmental Neurobiology and Sensory Systems. Recently, she successfully completed her Diploma at UBC in Special Education.
She has experience volunteering and working with people from various settings. She volunteered at Special Olympics as an assistant coach, St. Michael’s Hospice as a palliative care assistant, and ICORD to assist those with spinal cord injury. She also worked as a therapy assistant at a pediatric occupational therapy clinic and as a student aid at a private school in Vancouver, supporting children with learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
At Life Skills Therapy, Janice works as a rehabilitation assistant and media coordinator. She aspires to become an occupational therapist who can directly impact individuals in their journey of regaining meaningful daily occupations.
